The Netherlands has for decades hosted labor migrants from over the world. Particularly people from the Muslim world. Sadly, they, but even their Dutch-born children (and even grandchildren) are often perceived as one homogenous group, and a blindness exists for the great diversity within. This societal issue formed the background to the painful invite the Dutch-Egyptian artist received for participating on a project called ‘Kunst-Marokkanen’ (art-Moroccans). In response to this mistake, but also as a more general expression of his experiences in the Netherlands, he decided to participate, nonetheless by creating a 3D sculpture of a Cuckoo’s nest.
